The 5 Essential Commands Every Dog Should Know
Just because your dog is trained doesn’t mean they are truly balanced. For your dog to be fully well-adjusted, learning commands alone isn't enough. While training isn’t always essential, it is a great way to stimulate your dog’s mind, strengthen your bond, and provide enjoyable ways to spend time together. Even if formal training isn’t your thing, there are a few key commands every dog should know.
Where to start?
You can sign up for dog training classes to learn under professional guidance—but it's not necessary. You can teach your dog at home! It’s not hard . The commands below will make everyday life with your dog much easier—and more fun!
1. Sit
One of the easiest commands and perfect for beginners!
Step-by-step:
Step 1: Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose.
Step 2: Move your hand up and over their head—this motion should make their bottom naturally lower.
Step 3: As soon as your dog sits, say “sit” and reward with a treat.
Repeat this daily, especially before meals, walks, or playtime.
2. Come
This is the most important command—it could save your dog’s life.
How to teach:
- Show your dog a treat and say “come” (or any recall word).
- Take a step back and lure your dog toward you.
- Praise and treat them when they arrive.
- Increase distance and eventually hide in another room before calling them.
- Always reward generously when they obey!
3. Down
This command can be challenging—it puts the dog in a submissive position, which might feel uncomfortable for some.
Steps:
- Use a very enticing treat in your fist and let your dog sniff.
- Move your hand toward the floor and then outwards along the ground.
- As your dog follows and lies down, say “down” and reward.
- Practice regularly and be patient—don’t force your dog into the position.
4. Stay
Your dog should already know how to “sit” before learning this.
Training method:
- Say “sit”, then show your open palm and firmly say “stay”.
- Step back slowly—if your dog follows, gently guide them back and try again.
- Reward even small successes, and slowly increase the distance and duration.
5. Leave it
A lifesaving command when your dog’s curiosity could put them in danger.
Training method:
- Place a treat in one hand, say “leave it”, and let your dog try to get it.
- Ignore their attempts—reward only when they back off and make eye contact.
- Progress to placing treats on the floor and covering with your foot if needed.
Teaching these five commands will make life easier and deepen the bond with your dog. And who knows—maybe it’ll be the start of an exciting training journey!
