Adopted by Love – A Story of My Animal Family

I grew up surrounded by animals—I can’t imagine life without them. I had three dogs, and after the last one passed away, I couldn’t bear living in a home where no one wagged their tail or snuggled up to me. My mom’s cat was expecting kittens, so I immediately decided to take one in. That was 14 years ago. Three months later, a tiny abandoned kitten joined my Pomponik. She had been left at the gate of the Forest Opera in Sopot on a cold November morning. My friend who worked there brought her to me. She was only four weeks old, had conjunctivitis, a damaged inner eyelid, was full of parasites, and barely clinging to life. For a week, I wasn’t sure if she would survive each night. But she got stronger. I named her Psotka, and she’s been with us for 14 years—just like Pomponik.

Last year I moved to the countryside, where I found an abandoned six-year-old tomcat. His owner had passed away, and no one took care of him. He was skinny, terrified, had scabies, and was covered in wounds and matted fur. He had likely survived three harsh winters outside. I took him in, treated him, and now he has shiny fur and no more health issues.

This March, in the village I now live in, someone dumped a small, frightened red-haired dog on the road. She wandered from yard to yard, cold and hungry, searching through trash for food while being yelled at and chased away by people. When I called her, she crawled toward me—unsure what to expect. When I reached out to pet her, she flinched and froze. I cried. How could someone hurt such a defenseless animal?

Of course, I took her in too, knowing nothing about her. The vet said she’s about 3–4 years old, has had puppies, and shows signs of abuse—tick infestation, conjunctivitis, and a scraped throat from excessive barking. Now she has nearly 2,000 square meters of yard, a warm doghouse with blankets and pillows, and most of all—a safe home and love. She's learning that a raised hand means petting, not hitting, that her bowl is always full, and she doesn’t have to wait for permission to eat. I named her Ruda. She’s only been with me for two weeks, but I already know she’s staying forever.

I can’t ignore animals in need. Over 14 years, I’ve adopted three animals—and they’re all still with me.

People ask why I didn’t choose a pet from a breeder. I didn’t choose the animals—they chose me. Fate brought us together at the right place and time. Although I didn’t adopt them through a shelter, I received great support from vets.

Each pet adapted differently. The cats quickly felt at home. The most recently adopted cat is still afraid of loud noises or sudden movements, but it’s improving. My dog was terrified of my hand at first. What helped? Patience, gentle petting, calm words, treats, and playful bonding. We still have work to do, but the difference is incredible.

I don’t focus on looks—nature made every being unique. They’re all beautiful, loving, loyal, and devoted. I don’t love them for something—I love them because they’re with me. Each one is different, and I wouldn’t trade them for the world.

Would I adopt again? YES. If life brings me another animal in need, I will not hesitate. Adoption is worth it. There’s no greater joy than knowing you saved a life. Nothing more beautiful than the sparkling eyes of a rescued animal.
