From Heartbreak to Hope — The Story of Brokat
When I think of childhood, the wagging tail of a dog is its symbol. From the very first days of my life, I had a canine companion by my side. That friendship lasted 16 years and left me with countless stories—have you ever met a dog that could steal food off the stove? Maybe, but probably not one who could lift the lid, eat the meal, and then cleverly cover his tracks.
Two years after losing my first dog, a tiny white furball entered my life. We shared carefree days, months, and years until the biggest test came—facing illness. We bravely dealt with diabetes, Addison’s disease, and blindness. After three challenging but meaningful years, I had to make the hardest decision. On February 9, 2019, we said goodbye after 10 beautiful years together.
Although a dog had always been part of my life, I thought to myself: "Never again." But that thought quickly faded—"A home without a dog is like a garden without flowers." The emptiness in the house was unbearable. I visited shelters, scrolled through Facebook—and one day, I came across a joyful dog named Brokat looking for a home.
Just a few days later, I went to the shelter and when I saw him in person, I knew—he was the one. On February 9, 2019, I said goodbye to my friend. Exactly one month later, on March 9, also a Saturday, just after noon, I signed the adoption papers. If that’s not fate, I don’t know what is.
Brokat kept the name he was given at the shelter—it was perfect for the new companion of a preschool teacher.
I didn’t care about the breed or age. One photo made my heart beat faster. Our first walk sealed it—I had found my lifelong friend.
Losing a dog is heartbreaking, but an empty home only deepens the loss. That’s why I can’t imagine life without a wagging tail beside me. Brokat is the first dog I officially adopted—from the Animal Shelter in Bolesław. I found the shelter through Facebook; all my previous dogs were strays.
My experience with the staff and volunteers was extremely positive—warm, welcoming, and helpful both before and after adoption.
Our adventure together is just beginning—it’s been a little over a month. Everything is new for Brokat, but he’s adjusted quickly. He’s cheerful and friendly, loves playing with other dogs and children, and patiently waits at home for me when I’m away.
I love him for his unconditional friendship. Looks don’t matter—what matters is his loving heart.
My adoption has even inspired someone close to me to prepare for adopting their own dog.
Why adopt? Because sharing life with a furry friend brings countless joyful moments. I highly recommend it—and I will definitely adopt again in the future.
